Singles Retreat - Fall Session

I am so excited to share with you my comprehensive program on writing, developing and debunking solo performance.  The pilot program just wrapped up in June and it was gr8. Fall it shall be even gr8tor!

What "people" are saying about Singles Retreat:

"I loved how you demystified solo performance in terms of considering all the collaboration involved, all of the behind the scenes antics & logistics, and all of the juicy intel about how much money it does or doesn’t cost to put on a show." PR

It meant a lot to me to have really generous insights from you, whose work I so love, it was exciting from the POV of an admirerer AND encouraging from the POV of a dirtbag low budget performer." BP

"I’ve been performing for two decades and took Singles Retreat to zhuzh up my practice. Oooweee did it deliver! Jibz’s prompts led me to *multiple* narrative breakthroughs in a project that was heretofore giving "meh" and the fundraising segment lit a fire to ask for more moola for a project. Not to be all MLM but I actually made money as a result of this program (!). Thank you, Jibz!!" - CPR

"This was such a special class. I’d been wanting an excuse/structure to get deeper into performance, and got to learn how the proverbial sausage is made DIRECTLY from one of my favorite performers. I would take this class again in a heartbeat!!! The community aspect was an unexpected bonus!" - MR

WHATS IN IT?

Sessions will be 2 hours and 15 minutes. The first 1/2 of class will include a weird and entertaining slide show made by me, through which I will discuss various aspects of performance practice - debunking the genius myth, dissolving gatekeeping bridge trolls, technique, balancing chaos and structure, using humor in your work, trying not to give up and become a lawyer, and much much more.

The second 1/2 of the session will be creative writing / performance prompts, discussion and Q + A.

ANDDDDDD - a 30 min 1:1 consult with me booked outside of workshop time!

There will also be supplemental readings/viewing materials provided.

We will also explore:

  • Why make performance?

  • Practical performance prep tools

  • Documentation

  • Applying for funding

  • Getting support other than the monetary kind

  • Doom doo doo brain

  • Best practices (boundaries + manners with yourself and co-workers)

🔌 There will also be the option to join an accountability pod or twod for the duration of the program. Optional but also optimal!

No experience necessary. This is for anyone who has a performance bubbling inside them that needs a hand guiding it out of its clamshell - (comedy, performance art, music, dance, anything live) you do not have to have an active performance life or art practice.

About me:
I have been making solo performance work since 2001. I have an undergrad degree from San Francisco Art Institute and certificate of completion of advanced Acting Program from American Conservatory Theater. I have been in several trashy punk bands and in dozens of short films and web series that never saw the light of day. In 2019 I sold a TV show to FX. I have taught theater and performance at NYU, Cal-Arts and PRATT and lectured internationally. I grew up going to a performing arts summer camp as a child and learned improv from the activist clown and Woodstock MC, Wavy Gravy. Which explains a lot. I have been curating and hosting Weirdo Night since 2016 in Los Angeles and NYC. I am sober and gayyyyyyy.
